COMMUNITY HEALTH INFORMATION CENTRE

Supporting healthy and active lifestyles

Due to the Christchurch Earthquake response, the Christchurch CHIC will be closed until further notice. Any outstanding or new resource orders will not be processed whilst this closure is in force.

The Community Health Information Centre or CHIC has been operating since 1992. We previously operated under different names such as 'Health Education' (Department of Health) and 'The Pamphlet Place' (Healthlink South).

We have a contract with the Ministry of Health (MoH) to distribute government health-related resources within our region. In addition, we provide some items from other health agencies such as The Cancer Society, Te Hōtu Manawa Māori, Family Planning and The Mental Health Foundation etc. We also hold a range of items that Community and Public Health staff have developed.

Who can use CHIC?

Anybody who lives in the Canterbury (from Kaikoura to the Waitaki River) and West Coast regions can access our resources.

What resources are available?

CHIC ResourcesResources are either free or available on loan. Free resources include pamphlets, posters and stickers. For loan we have videos, DVDs, CD-ROMs, educational kits, books and MoH documents.

We publish a Stock List quarterly, which lists all our current free resources which are available to order.

The Christchurch office produces a regular CHIC Newsletter with information about new free resources, and those currently under revision or no longer available.

How do I obtain the free resources?

Resources can be ordered by mail, fax, phone, email, online, or by visiting one of our centres.

Items produced by organisations other than the Ministry of Health or Community and Public Health are not available to order online.

Please download our Order Form for use when ordering by fax or mail.

All free resources will be delivered free of charge within our geographic region, and should be dispatched to you within 5 working days of receiving your order, unless we are out of stock, in which case delivery may take up to one month or longer. We will inform you of your order's progress. Please check your delivery docket for details.

How do I loan items?

All loan items are held in the Christchurch Office, and if you live outside Christchurch you can loan items by contacting one of our regional offices. Staff at the regional offices will order your items from the Christchurch Office, which will be delivered to your local office within one week depending on availability. You will then be contacted to pick up your items. Returns can also be made to the regional offices. Unfortunately due to high costs, we cannot post or courier loan items directly to you.

If you are not a current member, you will need to fill out a Borrower Form. Once that's completed you can loan three items at a time for up to two weeks.  Our Resource Catalogue lists all the loan items available to borrow and these are available by contacting one of our offices.

Other Services

CHIC Library StandDisplay Stands
We currently have a number of Display Stands located at local Work and Income Centres, Libraries and Service Centres. These hold a variety of our most popular pamphlets. Please contact your local CHIC office if your organisation is interested in displaying our resources.

Resource/Trade Displays at Local Health Events
We also display our free resources at local community events and health educational days. Please contact us if you have an event which you would like us to attend.

Awareness Calendar
Every year we produce an Awareness Calendar, which lists key dates for various health days, weeks and events e.g. SunSmart Week, Breast Cancer Awareness, and World Smokefree Day.  Please contact us if you have an event or appeal you would like to have included in our next Awareness Calendar.
