ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

Many activities that have the potential to adversely effect our environment, consequently have adverse public health effects. Services such as running water and sewerage have contributed historically towards large improvements in population health and over recent years other issues such as ionisation, noise, waste management, air quality, recreational waters, shellfish gathering, and housing have become very much a part of environmental health.

The Community and Public Health Health Protection Officers work with local and regional authorities on environmental health issues, and provide services in the following areas:

  • Quality of the air we breathe
  • Sanitary Burials, Cremations and Interments
  • Assessment and management of contaminated land in order to minimise any potential or actual effects on public health
  • Monitoring of environmental noise controls by local territorial authorities
  • Management of hazardous substances to minimise their impact on public health
  • Responding to inquiries about radiation both ionising and non-ionising
  • Supporting local efforts to combat climate change

A variety of environmental health issues such waste management and drinking water are covered on other pages within the Community and Public Health website.
