Safe drinking water, available to everyone, is a fundamental requirement for public health. Drinking water can contain harmful germs, such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Campylobacter, Salmonella and E.coli O157 which can cause serious illness.
Community and Public Health works on behalf of the Ministry of Health to facilitate improvement in the quality of community drinking water supplies throughout our district.
Staff do this by using the following tools:
- Administering the requirements of the Health (Drinking Water) Amendment Act 2007
- Assessing water suppliers compliance with the Drinking Water Standards for New Zealand
- Assessing water supplies and assigning a ‘Public Health Grade'
- Assessing water supplier's public health risk management plans
- Assisting small water supplies via the Drinking Water Assistance Programme

Drinking Water Assistance Programme |

Safe drinking-water is a necessity for people's health but many small New Zealand communities do not have access to drinking-water that is shown to be safe. These are the communities that Community and Public Health would like to help through the Drinking Water Assistance Programme.
The Drinking Water Assistance Programme is made up of two components: the Technical Assistance Programme, and the Capital Assistance Programme. Any drinking water supplier serving fewer than 5000 people can participate in the Technical Assistance Programme, and there is no charge. The Capital Assistance Programme will provide Ministry of Health funding to community drinking-water supplies that supply less than 5000 people and meet certain eligibility criteria.
