Communicable Disease / Rest Home Outbreaks

Outbreaks of Norovirus gastroenteritis are being increasingly recognised in the community, hospitals and elderly care facilities in New Zealand. Institutional outbreaks involving hospitals and elderly care facilities are important as the residents represent high-risk populations for the transmission of gastrointestinal illness due to them being relatively immuno-suppressed.

If your rest home experiences an outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting please do the following:

  • Seek infection control advice from an Infection Control Nurse at a Community Laboratory
  • Contact Community and Public Health to notify the outbreak to the Medical Officer of Health
  • Print out the two forms below and complete and fax back to Community and Public Health at the end of the outbreak.
  • Further advice can be sought from Community and Public Health
